<span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">I</span><span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">f you are anything like me, you are just starting to gear up for the holidays. And if you aren’t, well, I admire and envy you. Regardless of how prepared you are, the holidays - especially holiday travel - can catch you off guard, causing undue stress and taking focus away from being present with your loved ones. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica;">
So in the name of holiday spirit, I thought I’d share how I try to prepare for travels. After all, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is <span style="font-kerning: none; text-decoration: line-through;">singing loud for all to hear</span> eliminating stress.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">

<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica;">
My Holiday Travel Essentials:</div>
<ol>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b>Hand cream:</b> Airplanes, cold weather and OCD hand washing (stay away, germs) all wreak havoc on my hands. My current favorite is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Camille-Beckman-Glycerin-Therapy-Morelia/dp/B004PX6K20">this small batch one</a> by Camille Beckman that is made sustainably in small batches.</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b>Healthy snack bars:</b> I have the hardest time eating in airports and on the go, so I stash up on <a href="http://www.goraw.com/">go raw bars</a> and <a href="http://www.elemental-raw.com/index.shtml">elemental superfood bars</a> (both available at Whole Foods). Tip: the spirulina ones pack extra protein.</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b>Host gifts:</b> <a href="http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/7990096/?catalogId=61&sku=7990096&cm_ven=Google_PLA&cm_cat=Shopping&cm_pla=default&cm_ite=default">Mulling spices</a> from Williams-Sonoma or Bulleit whiskey for hot toddies (pick up some mini bottles if you're flying).</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b>Sequins: </b>The holidays aren’t complete without them.</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b><a href="http://serialpodcast.org/">Serial</a>:</b> The new podcast by the creators of This American Life makes long car rides go by in a flash. But Serial debates can get heated, so maybe don’t bring it up over Christmas dinner.</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b>My husband’s <a href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-portable-battery-chargers/">portable iPhone charger</a>:</b> What’s his is mine, right?</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tide-Instant-Stain-Remover-Liquid/dp/B0037KMI0K">Tide to go</a>:</b> This isn’t just a holiday essential. I carry one in my purse and one in my car at all times, because I’ve learned the hard way that if something can be spilled, it will be spilled. Usually, on my white blouse.</li>
<li style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><b><a href="https://relayrides.com/">RelayRides</a>:</b> I just discovered this peer to peer car rental service. Rent your car airbnb-style while you're away for a little extra holiday cash, or <a href="https://relayrides.com/airports" target="_blank">rent one at the airport</a> to save money and avoid ridiculously long waits at a rental counter. Added bonus: the sharing industry is the greener way to go.</li>
</ol>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">Whether you are staying close or traveling this holiday, I wish you and yours the merriest. xox.</span></div>

Last week, I wrote a City Guide to San Diego for Darling Magazine. Darling curates great content, and their City Guide series reads like recommendations from your best friends. So it was such a pleasure to share what San Diego has to offer and why I've fallen in love with this city. Granted, it's not hard to do, and there's a reason it's one of the top tourist destinations in the country. But in living here for almost a decade (!!), I've found that San Diego has much to offer beyond the well known attractions, and I'm not holding back in spilling the dirt on all of its gems. Check out the full post over at <a href="http://darlingmagazine.org/city-guide-san-diego/" target="_blank">Darling Magazine</a>!<br />

Also, aren't these photos by <a href="http://gantes.co/" target="_blank">Gantes Co.</a> to die for? Book your ticket now, friends. You won't be sorry.<br />

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">I had the pleasure of being a <a href="http://twloha.com/Self-Care-Isnt-Selfish" target="_blank">guest contributor</a> for the incredible organization, <a href="http://twloha.com/" target="_blank">To Write Love on Her Arms</a>, this week. TWLOHA empowers young people to believe that they have a unique role to play in this world and provides hope to those struggling with depression, self harm, and suicide. I love their message: Your story matters. You are not alone. No one else can play your part. </span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">For my guest post, I thought I’d talk about a lesson I continue to learn over and over again - that being your most creative, brilliant and productive self means making a consistent habit of rest and play. That our dreams demand the best of us, so we need to take care of ourselves when we go after them. That self care isn’t selfish, and rest is not weakness.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">My friend Ange has been preaching the <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/sr?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=60135750&keyword=zella" target="_blank">Zella’s</a> gospel for awhile now. Last week, I thought I’d check it out and see if its worth the hype. </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">You guys, it is.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br />
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Zella is Nordstrom’s activewear brand, and the Creative Director is the former Product Manager at lululemon. I do really love lulu gear, but my wallet doesn't always agree... and the Zella prices during the Anniversay Sale are unbeatable: leggings start at <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/zella-live-in-capris/3059164?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=60135750&fashionColor=&resultback=1681&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_4_C" target="_blank">$28</a>. Twenty eight dollars, </span>ya'll.<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> I'll just let that sink in for a moment.</span></span><br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I bought the <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/zella-live-in-reversible-leggings/3035710?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=60135750&fashionColor=Black&resultback=2822&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_7_A" target="_blank">live in legging</a> in both black & grey, and a <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/zella-double-time-print-sports-bra/3645133?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=60135750&fashionColor=Blue+Vivid+Lava+Print&resultback=2150&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_5_D" target="_blank">cute sports bra</a> for good measure. My review: the fabric on the legging is a little different than the lululemon wunder under, but just as good quality. They’re thick, so they won’t be see-through when you’re in down dog, and they make your posterior look just as fantastic. Two added bonuses - 1) you can throw these guys in the dryer and it won’t destroy them; and 2) you can’t tell they are workout gear, so you can transition them from morning runs to layering with boots and a sweater at night. Maybe just wash them first.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Just to clarify: Ange and I don’t get commission (although we wouldn’t hate it) and this post is not sponsored by Nordstrom’s. I just can’t resist sharing a great deal.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I recently realized that although I’m very careful about eliminating harmful chemicals in what I eat, I had no idea what types of chemicals I was putting on my body in the form of beauty products, hair care, makeup, etc. The cosmetic industry is not regulated, and the government does not require safety testing of the ingredients in products or long-term studies on toxic effects. As women, we typically put 200+ unique chemicals on our skin every day, which get absorbed into our bodies and wreak all sorts of havoc. Yikes.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">It can be overwhelming to think about, but I always try to take it one step at a time, and I’ve been slowly phasing out my old products and </span>phasing<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> in new, safer ones. </span></span><br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">One quick swap I’d recommend is switching to natural deodorant. The </span></span><a href="http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/antiperspirants-and-breast-cancer-risk" style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;" target="_blank">American Cancer Society claims</a><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> that there isn’t enough research to support rumors that deodorants and </span>antiperspirants<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> cause breast cancer, but regardless, I want as few chemicals on my skin as possible. </span></span><br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">A few months ago, I ditched my dove deodorant, full of all sorts of chemicals I can’t pronounce, to <a href="http://www.schmidtsdeodorant.com/" target="_blank">schmidt’s natural deodorant</a>. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I have to admit, I a little was sketched on natural deodorant and wasn’t sure it would actually work, but this brand delivers. It works really well, is high quality, and has 100% all natural ingredients, without the harmful parabens and aluminum that come in other deodorants. Its also vegan and cruelty-free.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I love the ylang-ylang + calendula scent, and if you’re trying to convince your man to switch too, try the cedarwood + juniper for him.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Through June 30th, everything is 20% off with the code “SUMMERDEO”. Check it out + let me know what you think!</span></div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I love a good cleanse. It is incredibly challenging, but oh so worth it. I’m about to start one this week, so I thought - let’s talk about cleanses, shall we?</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Just a little disclaimer - I’m not an expert. This is what I’ve gathered from going through it several times, and lots of reading and researching. But I definitely encourage you to do your homework as well to make sure you are detoxing safely.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>Why I Love It</b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">A lot of people are scared to do a cleanse, and I get it. Even though I do one every year, its still daunting every time. I have to mentally gear up before hand, because I know I’ll be tempted to give up more than once, especially in the first few days. In case you need motivation, here are the biggest benefits that I’ve experienced:</span></div>
<ol>
<li style="margin: 0px;"><b style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">Reset Good Habits:</b><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> Or kick bad ones. I’ve been traveling a ton recently, and all that indulging really takes a toll. </span>Plus, <span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">I’m a recovering cheese + sugar addict, and sometimes the only way for me to reset habits is to do something a little extreme. The amazing thing is that when you get sugar, dairy, wheat, and processed foods out of your system, you stop craving them. I believe positive motivation is the strongest motivation, and once you’ve finished the cleanse, you’ll feel great and not want to add all those things back in.</span></span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>More Energy</b>: Over the last few years, I’ve often wondered why I have so little energy. It just didn’t seem right to be tired all the time in my 20s. Being fed up with it was actually my primary motivator for my first ever cleanse, which promised more energy and better sleep. I’ve found it to be really true. Without all the processed food and caffeine, I was waking up before my alarm (honestly, that's miraculous) and felt more energized than I had in years - like the energy I thought I left behind when I graduated high school.</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>Improved Health:</b> A good cleanse supports your digestive system, boosts your immune system and gets rid of toxins stored in your body. Our bodies work really hard for us every day, and we put them through a lot - sitting all day at a desk, drinking too much caffeine, taking full advantage of the craft beer scene in San Diego (just me?). Giving it a break from all that allows it to go to work repairing damaged cells, breaking down fat cells, and resting from its usual hyperactivity.</span></li>
<li style="margin: 0px;"><b style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">Mind-Body Awareness:</b><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> Food is psychological - we eat when we’re bored, tired, emotional, anxious, lonely - so naturally a cleanse is also an opportunity for personal reflection and self awareness. I love that detoxing forces me to observe what habits I’ve built up unknowingly and confront </span></span><i style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">why</i><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">. There is also something refreshing about removing the negative associations of guilt, shame and insecurity we sometimes feel, and reconnecting with food </span>positively<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> as a source of nourishment.</span></span></li>
<li style="margin: 0px;"><b style="font-family: Helvetica; letter-spacing: 0px;">Discipline & Confidence</b><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">: The fact that this is really hard makes it so rewarding. I love accomplishing something </span>that initially <span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">seems impossible. Our minds are stronger than we think they are, and it’s liberating to observe our cravings, watch them pass, and feel like a badass for not giving in. </span></span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>Lose a few lbs:</b> I try not to let this be my primary motivation, because I believe in sustained habits over quick fixes for losing or maintaining weight. But I don’t hate it as a side effect. Hello, beach season.</span></li>
</ol>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<b style="letter-spacing: 0px;">My Go-To Cleanse</b><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The cleanse I love doing is <a href="http://swansonhealthcenter.com/topics/igreen-nutrition-super-cleanse/" target="_blank">this one by Swanson Health Center</a>. I’m a big fan, because its developed by nutritionists and you actually get to eat on it. A girl’s gotta work and still be able to function, right? </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br />
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">When I get sick of the smoothies, I <a href="http://tiffanynaturally.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-green-smoothie.html" target="_blank">change up the recipe</a> or go for a fruit salad or veggie salad. I add in green tea and kombucha. </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">If I'm really hungry, I double the smoothie recipe or snack on fruits, veggies and nuts. We aren’t here to starve ourselves, and it should be hard but not horrible. </span>As long as you stay with whole, unprocessed foods, you should be okay.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">I’ll sometimes add in a 1 to 3 day juice cleanse in the middle (like <a href="http://blueprintcleanse.com/choose-your-cleanse-2.html" target="_blank">Blueprint</a> or <a href="https://www.pressedjuicery.com/products/juice-cleanses" target="_blank">Pressed Juicery</a>). At that point, I’ve adjusted and built up some serious discipline, so it is surprisingly doable.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">On this cleanse, you are giving up:</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Processed foods</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Wheat</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Dairy</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Soy</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Grains</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Caffeine</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Alcohol</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Refined Sugar</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>Tips for Detoxing</b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Preparation is key to sticking with a cleanse. In addition to gearing up mentally, here are some tips:</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><a href="http://swansonhealthcenter.com/topics/detoxification/" target="_blank">Do your homework</a> if you are doing a different cleanse, especially a juice only cleanse. These can release toxins too quickly from your fat cells, and your liver needs adequate nutrients to do its job.</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Think about starting it on a Monday, and cutting out caffeine on the Saturday or Sunday before. Caffeine withdrawals are real, y’all, and they aren’t fun. Staggering the coffee headaches with the start of the detox makes it a little easier.</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Try to eat as clean as possible a few days before and after to ease in and out of the cleanse slowly. If you are feeling really run down, having digestive problems, or think you may have food allergies, consider keeping a food journal and adding foods back in one at a time to see how it affects you. Like week 1, add back in gluten, week 2, add back dairy, week 3, add sugar… Or don’t add them back in at all. </span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Find friends to do it with you. Its easier and adds much needed accountability when you are surrounding by others experiencing the same thing. </span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Write down your intentions for doing the cleanse somewhere, so you can revisit them when it gets hard. Focus on the positive to stay motivated. </span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Be strategic about timing. I didn’t realize once when I started the cleanse that it would be during the Superbowl. Its not fun to be that person, especially during the Superbowl.</span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; margin: 0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Hang in there. Don’t sell yourself short. Finish it out so you can see all that hard work pay off.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">That was a long one. I’d love for you to join in the dialogue, friends! What cleanses do you like? What were the biggest benefits? What are your tips and tricks for getting through it?</span></div>

<br />
Excuse me while I freak out a little bit. My favorite online source for everything health + wellness, <a href="http://www.thechalkboardmag.com/" target="_blank">Chalkboard Mag</a>, asked me to write about how I set up a wellness program at <a href="http://www.invisiblechildren.com/" target="_blank">Invisible Children</a>, and how I personally found work-life balance in a high-pressure, cause-driven environment. I happily said yes, dove in and wrote way too much (don't worry, we edited it down). And today, I am beyond excited to share my eight year journey of navigating sacrifice and self-care with you all.<br />
<br />
I'd love for you to check out the article <a href="http://thechalkboardmag.com/sweet-charity-thoughts-finding-work-life-balance-pressure" target="_blank">here</a> and join in the conversation. I certainly don't have all the answers and my understanding of balance is ever evolving. I'd love to know how you prioritize wellness and self care amidst career, family, and crazy schedules. Do you have a mantra or a ritual? What brings you back to center? And, do you love Chalkboard as much as I do??<br />
<br />
Also, shout out to the lovely Sophia Bush for guest editing at Chalkboard this month. Don't miss her poignant + personal letter about true beauty <a href="http://thechalkboardmag.com/meet-june-editor-sophia-bush" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

If you're anything like me, you just started wondering what dad wants for Father's Day (oops). My friend Ellen Gustafson released her first book last week, and it’s guaranteed to be a good one. Ellen is a sustainable food activist, food policy expert, social entrepreneur, and all around badass. I met Ellen a few years ago at a TEDx event, where she was giving one of her <i>four</i> TED talks, and she quickly became one of my inspirations.<br />
<br />
In “We the Eaters,” Ellen lays out her manifesto - that by changing our dinner plates, we can change the broken food system, and really change the world. She explains:<br />
<div>
<br />
<i>"We the Eaters" weaves together the global stories of hunger and food insecurity that I saw so often in my work with FEED with the state of our domestic food system that leaves too many Americans unhealthy and overweight. There are concrete ideas about how every Eater, aka each of us, can make changes on our plates to improve the systems that bring us all food everyday. </i><br />
<br />
I love concrete. I can't wait for my copy to arrive. Go buy yours <a href="http://www.amazon.com/We-Eaters-Change-Dinner-World-ebook/dp/B00FWT9IFC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1401998539&sr=1-1&keywords=we+the+eaters" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Friends, let me introduce you to my newest obsession: soba noodles. I'm seeing them pop up all over my favorite blogs, and I'm wondering if soba is the next quinoa or brussels sprouts. These little guys are from Japan and are made from buckwheat flour so they're gluten-free, low-cal, high in protein. Soba also contains all eight essential amino acids, cancer-fighting antioxidants and heart-healthy nutrients. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pair them with some veggies and you've got a full on party. </div>

I made the ginger scallion bowl this week, and I can't wait to try all these other recipes. Do you have any go-to soba dishes? Do share. xo.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVHWeKW1sx2Ip1JeaK1YSpAPtOOkS_vz_LUYRAkfU70S4rG_Dat3vrPhh5wVRtZbGmRAWBLuViViejMMc9IKRxN0JsCBNa_V7jEKMzDya1Uv4LiW9tnHxar9xSUuGn4GL2sCQNBz6nhBgb/s3200/Granola.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVHWeKW1sx2Ip1JeaK1YSpAPtOOkS_vz_LUYRAkfU70S4rG_Dat3vrPhh5wVRtZbGmRAWBLuViViejMMc9IKRxN0JsCBNa_V7jEKMzDya1Uv4LiW9tnHxar9xSUuGn4GL2sCQNBz6nhBgb/s3200/Granola.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Every year, my mom makes a huge batch of this granola to give out as Christmas gifts. I usually run out in March, grieve a little, and then try to convince her to make more. This was the first time I've made it myself, and I couldn't believe how easy it was. Maybe it's my inner Monica Gellar, but I felt a little bit triumphant in creating something that's more delicious <i>and</i> way healthier than what you can buy in bakeries or stores.<br />
<br />
<i>what you need: </i><br />
4 cups old fashioned rolled oats<br />
2 cups sweetened shredded coconut <span style="font-size: x-small;">(be careful if using organic - it burns easily)</span><br />
2 cups sliced almonds<br />
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil <span style="font-size: x-small;">(<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Napa-Valley-Organic-Extra-Virgin/dp/B000QW6UKQ" target="_blank">my EVOO of choice</a> for cooking & baking)</span><br />
1/2 cup good honey <span style="font-size: x-small;">(get local honey - it helps protect against local allergens)</span><br />
1 1/4 cup dried apricots, diced into small pieces<br />
3/4 cup dried cherries<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_ih_LM7pF200sl-qPt4FykTU1HXbEjInmj2SIljsLrhcq4A8avD4KoENeTTgKm5UiLPsSKpR_Qld8KHgj5wYVek7a7Z_S58rCZ11abkJLV8rmo4Xp9QT_xm79yRN2QB8obF0H6wUE9y1k/s3200/granola2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_ih_LM7pF200sl-qPt4FykTU1HXbEjInmj2SIljsLrhcq4A8avD4KoENeTTgKm5UiLPsSKpR_Qld8KHgj5wYVek7a7Z_S58rCZ11abkJLV8rmo4Xp9QT_xm79yRN2QB8obF0H6wUE9y1k/s3200/granola2.jpg" /></a></div>
<i>how to make it:</i><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Preheat the oven to 350 degrees</li>
<li>Combine oats, coconut, almonds in a large bowl</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOVu1u6DXVC1369FiVPhxME4C5swFKzElhR7y4KQEf9DqcVcU9qpby-g-4fV85ZbrPfZeD6Ef-DWM77wdKMKGfOrH90TBTm_hF1SEqi1WxxHZ-Y2XL1__i1EWamebjMxOigkd1nTfTjmrT/s3200/making-granola3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOVu1u6DXVC1369FiVPhxME4C5swFKzElhR7y4KQEf9DqcVcU9qpby-g-4fV85ZbrPfZeD6Ef-DWM77wdKMKGfOrH90TBTm_hF1SEqi1WxxHZ-Y2XL1__i1EWamebjMxOigkd1nTfTjmrT/s3200/making-granola3.jpg" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-align: center;">Whisk together the honey and EVOO in a small bowl, pour over oat mixture until it is evenly covered</span></li>
<li><span style="text-align: center;">P</span>our granola onto a baking pan, spread evenly (line it with parchment paper or a <a href="http://www.silpat.com/" target="_blank">silpat</a> if you don't want it to stick)</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTX51hHS1inCw4RFUysQpfJIj8dKAFxLPkO0ZGT0jU8Hd-87WZpkFqGydeTDkjPJm-m2Z-kfC99Y4YxIllQB4ey9SwF6z0Tn97galxt0gVSbaJf18pZ0LoALGA6X793K5P-QNvtsRJEQdU/s3200/making-granola2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTX51hHS1inCw4RFUysQpfJIj8dKAFxLPkO0ZGT0jU8Hd-87WZpkFqGydeTDkjPJm-m2Z-kfC99Y4YxIllQB4ey9SwF6z0Tn97galxt0gVSbaJf18pZ0LoALGA6X793K5P-QNvtsRJEQdU/s3200/making-granola2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Bake for 20 - 30 minutes, checking and stirring occasionally to make sure it doesn't burn </li>
<li>Exact baking time varies by oven - just stay close & watch it around 20 minutes - it will be done when it has an even, golden brown color</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<ul>
<li>Once cooled, mix in the apricots, cashews and cherries (I like keep the dried fruit minimal, but you can also add in dried cranberries, dried figs, etc.)</li>
</ul>

<li>Voila! Add some berries and greek yogurt, and dig right in</li>
<li>Store the rest in an airtight container</li>

In San Diego, we're experiencing this little-known phenomenon called weather this weekend. It's so rare for us to have a stormy day, much less an entire stormy weekend. I'm really appreciating the occasion to pause and hibernate for a few days. But before I sign off, I wanted to share a round up of what I've been reading this week...<br />
<br />
A recipe for a <a href="http://notwithoutsalt.com/2013/12/18/hot-ginger-toddy/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">hot ginger toddy</span></a> that I'm planning on making later today, when I'm snuggled up on the couch with a good book.<br />
<br />
Why I'm working on <a href="http://darlingmagazine.org/benefits-of-fermented-foods/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">adding more fermented foods</span></a> to my diet. Recipe coming soon for kimchi brussels sprouts.<br />
<br />
This minimalist, <a href="http://www.thelibrary.co.th/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">library-themed hotel</span></a> in Thailand that I can't stop day dreaming about.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.greenkitchenstories.com/homemade-healthier-nutella/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Homemade, healthier nutella</span></a>. Yes, please.<br />
<br />
My girl Michelle Obama announced this week that <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/food-labels-to-get-first-makeover-in-20-years-with-new-emphasis-on-calories-sugar/2014/02/26/c8feeb4c-9f08-11e3-9ba6-800d1192d08b_story.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">food labels are getting a makeover</span></a>, with more realistic serving sizes, prominent calorie counts and an added sugars column.<br />
<br />
Have you heard of <a href="http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2010/09/laughter-yoga.html" style="color: blue;" target="_blank">laughter yoga</a>?<br />
<br />
Cute, <a href="http://theglitterguide.com/2014/02/28/printable-2014-oscars-ballot/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">printable Oscar party ballots</span></a>.<br />
<br />
Have a great weekend, friends!<br />

This is the ultimate summer salad. It would be perfect to bring to a post-beach BBQ or picnic, and its my new go-to for any leftover watermelon. The saltiness of the feta complements the sweetness of the watermelon so well. Since it is so simple, the key is to use high quality ingredients, particularly for the feta and olive oil. You can try different combinations by adding spinach, arugula, cucumbers or slivered almonds. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
<b>Watermelon, Feta & Mint Salad</b><br />
1/4 watermelon<br />
4 oz. crumbled feta <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(my pick: pastures of eden from trader joes)</span><br />
6 sprigs fresh mint<br />
Good quality extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar<br />
Salt & pepper, to taste<br />
<br />
Cut watermelon into cubes and add to a bowl. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic over the melon, then crumble feta on top. Tear or chop mint and add to the bowl. Sprinkle sea salt & pepper, and mix until combined.<br />

Ever since we got our vitamix, husband and I have become slightly obsessed with our morning smoothies. So much so that I’m actually starting to believe that husband is secretly a Vitamix
salesman.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"> (But truly, if you're on the fence about getting a good blender, <i>do it</i>. It's worth the investment.)</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
We’ve been experimenting with all sorts of recipes and combinations, and
my go-to is the green smoothie. Green smoothies can be intimidating,
but I promise, they don’t taste like greens. Or dirt. With the right proportions, they're sweet and delicious. If it weren't for the color, you wouldn't know you are drinking spinach.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, here it is. The pretty-much-perfect green smoothie:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<ul>
<li>8 oz. Coconut Water</li>
<li>1 Scoop Protein Powder <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Mercola-Pro-Optimal-Whey-Vanilla/dp/B001GFB3MW" target="_blank">my protein powder of choice</a>)</span></li>
<li>2 handfuls spinach or 1 handful kale</li>
<li>1 tbsp chia seeds or 1 tbsp ground flax seeds</li>
<li>Small handful of almonds</li>
<li>1 ripe or frozen banana</li>
<li>½ cup frozen mango</li>
<li>A few ice cubes</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
Add the liquid first, then the powders, then the greens,
then the banana & mango. The trick is to put the most solid items on top, to push down the other ingredients so it blends evenly. You certainly don't need a Vitamix to make this, but you do want a blender that can really pulverize those greens.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
If its not quite right, here are some tips:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Add more fruit if its too watery. </li>
<li>Add more coconut water if its too thick.</li>
<li>If you like it a little sweeter, add honey or an apple.</li>
<li>If you like it creamier, you can add some avocado or greek yogurt.</li>
</ul>
<br />
Once you’ve got it down, start experimenting with other ingredients - just maybe not papaya. Kale and papaya <i>might</i> taste a little bit like dirt.<br />
<br /></div>
If you get obsessed too, you can check out more smoothie inspiration on my <a href="http://pinterest.com/tiffanykeesey/eat-well-breakfast-juices/" target="_blank">Pinterest board</a>. Enjoy!<br />

get to <i>ride</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> them in Thailand. My inner
five year old was
freaking out. </span></div>

As I started doing research, I learned that the process
of domesticating elephants for work and tourism is inhumane. The parks had mixed reviews, and some travelers were
disturbed while riding the elephants, as the mahouts<span style="font-style: normal;"> were brutally jabbing them with sharp
hooks to get them to perform.</span></div>

I just knew we
just couldn’t support those places with our time and money. Luckily, I found
the <a href="http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/" target="_blank">Elephant Nature Park</a> and booked it immediately.</div>

First things first, it's (apparently) a known fact that exercise positively contributes to your overall health and wellness. Well, I don't like to exercise. There was a time where I took up running, and there was also a time where I purchased a <a href="http://www.jazzercise.com/jazzercise_dvds.htm" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">Jazzercise DVD</a> and did it twice. I'll be honest and say I tend to not stick with things, and I would prefer the fat to just fall off my body while sitting on the couch. A bonus would be if I could just sweat out all my impurities while sitting in a lounge chair next to the pool instead of a hot <span class="il">yoga </span>studio. </div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Well dear reader, I am a changed woman. Because I now practice <span class="il">yoga</span>. I bought a mat and everything.</div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Recommended by a friend (who has been at it for four months and has effectively transformed her body), I decided to try it. First class? I hated it. It was too hard, too hot, I thought I was dying, and I'm pretty sure I saw Jesus. Pick yourself up and try again, as my mother always says before I punch her in the face. So two days later I went back. Easier class (intro beginner amateur hour), little less hot, little more stamina. I started slow, and began trying all the different classes, sweating my way through my lovehandle reserve of beer, and carbs, and artificial sweetener. </div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
A co-worker of mine goes to <span class="il">Yoga</span> for the purpose of centering herself, relaxing, and getting in touch with her heart & brain & feelings. While all of those are certainly valid reasons, that is not why I go to <span class="il">Yoga</span>. I attend for the sole vain purpose of getting so in shape that people stop me on the street to ask me what the heck I've been doing to look so <i>fantastic</i>. That hasn't happened yet, but I really feel like it could happen soon (sidenote: I can usually be found walking near my work in Barrio Logan around noon M-F.)</div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Case in point: you should try <span class="il">Yoga</span>. You never knew your legs could bend that way, or that you could sweat so much without passing out. You'll feel stronger, and more flexible, and you'll reduce your jiggles (you know the ones.) And just in case I haven't successfully swayed you to sign up for a <a href="http://www.corepoweryoga.com/sites/default/files/IMCE/pdf/free_week_jan12.jpg" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">free week</a>, here is a shortened list of the <a href="http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/beginnersguide/yogabenefits.asp" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">benefits</a> of <span class="il">Yoga</span>:</div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<b>Decreases:</b> blood pressure, respiratory rate, and hostility.</div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<b>Increases:</b> energy levels, joint range of motion, and the chances your thin jeans will fit.</div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<b>Improves:</b> posture, concentration, and the chances your thin jeans will fit. </div>
<div style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br />
<div>
My final push for you to do everything I do - <span class="il">Yoga</span> is actually fun. After you leave the class and go outside and breath air that doesn't feel like it's coming out of a humidifier, you feel awesome. And thin. And liberated. </div>

Join me, won't you? I'll be the one grunting in the corner. </div>

<br />
<br />
Husband & I are currently exploring Thailand and we're off to Bali tomorrow for some serious R&R. I've always been fascinated with Bali, and I can't wait to visit. My parents vacationed there when I was 11 months old and its actually a pretty incredible story. They were 30-something somewhat-newlyweds, living in Colorado with a house and a new baby (#yourstruly) and great jobs and all the skiing they could ever want, but they had a strong desire to live in and travel around South East Asia. My dad put in for a transfer, they sold their house, and moved to Malaysia... with a baby. I've always admired them for it, but now I'm approaching my 30s, I'm beginning to understand their adventurous spirit and courage in choosing life experiences over comfort and security. Its a piece of my family history that I treasure, and I like to think its where my love for travel was born.<br />
<br />
I've always wished I could remember living in Malaysia and traveling to Bali with them. While this trip is nothing like moving my entire life, I'm still beyond excited to go and make new memories. And of course, blog the heck out of it to share with all of you.<br />
<br />
With that, these are my packing essentials for Bali (and really, any summer trip):<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tiny+beautiful+things" target="_blank"><b>Tiny, Beautiful Things</b></a>: A collection of advice columns from the online columnist Dear Sugar. My dear friend Lindsay recommended this book to me & I'm devouring it. Its beautiful, honest, heartfelt and inspiring.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lifes-Operating-Manual-Dialogues-ebook/dp/B00BLSZJS8/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370221290&sr=1-1&keywords=life%27s+operating+manual" target="_blank"><b>Life's Operating Manual</b></a>: Tom Shadyac's book, structured as a dialogue between Truth and Fear, is so packed with wisdom that I'm reading it again. Its an incredible conversation starter and I'm looking forward to discussing it with husband over long dinners in Bali's jungles & beaches.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Farm-City-Education-Farmer-ebook/dp/B0028256DY/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370221327&sr=1-1&keywords=farm+city" target="_blank"><b>Farm City</b></a>: My thoughtful friend Amy gave me this book about a year ago. I'm a little ashamed its taken me this long to start it, but I can't wait to not be able to put it down.</li>
<li>My <b>nifty fifty lens</b> to try to capture some of the best moments, a <b>head lamp </b>packed by husband for night adventuring, and of course, <b>our tickets</b>.</li>
<li><b>Sunscreen</b> & a <a href="http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/accessories/scarvesandhats/PRDOVR~74503/99103054815/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~~0~15~all~mode+matchallany~~~~~floppy%20hat/74503.jsp" target="_blank"><b>floppy straw hat</b></a>: to practice safe sun exposure, because I plan on getting a lot of sun.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.warbyparker.com/women/sunwear/womens-sunglasses-griffin-black" target="_blank"><b>Warby sunglasses</b></a>: I'll defer my love for Warby to another time, but check them out. They're stylish and cost effective.</li>
<li>My most lightweight <b>lululemon yoga pants</b> (<a href="http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/women-crops/In-The-Flow-Crop?cc=8353&skuId=3505525&catId=women-crops" target="_blank">similar</a>): I can't wait to wear these while doing my sun salutations at <a href="http://www.theyogabarn.com/" target="_blank">The Yoga Barn</a>.</li>
<li><b>Cute tote</b>: that's easy to pack, great for day trips, and has a sweet message (<i>hold on to something good & don't let go</i>).</li>
</ul>
And of course I had to do a tiny bit of shopping before the trip. My best finds were:<br />
<ul>
<li>A new <a href="http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/swim.jsp" target="_blank">JCrew suit</a>: in this adorable floral pattern. I die.</li>
<li>These perfect summer <a href="http://www.shophallelu.com/gallerydetails/id/962301/lexus-gold-plated-sandal" target="_blank">sandals</a>: from Hallelu.</li>
</ul>
<br />
What are you planning for your summer adventures, and what's on your must-pack list?<br />

As a so-cal girl through and through, I'm loving the warm weather, the long days, and the spring & summer produce in our CSA. Asparagus, artichokes, avocados, blood oranges, blueberries, fennel, peaches, strawberries. Honestly, it doesn't get much better.<br />
<br />
I've been inspired to make Spring recipes that I've been pinning all year, and these are first up on my list. What are your favorite spring & summer recipes?<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">We’ve
all been there: the rut. The point when you’ve gotten out of the exercise
routine and starting back up seems impossible. I mean, its Newton’s law. It
takes more energy to put something in motion than to keep it in motion. We’re
going heads up with physics, people.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">But
its possible to get out of it and actually enjoy working out. I promise,
because I’ve been there. Here’s how to get to that place:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b>1. Start somewhere.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">It
doesn’t matter where. Just do something. Put Beyonce on youtube and dance around
your house. Jog one block around your neighborhood. Okay, maybe two. Let your
dog pull you along on a hike (pictured, above). Your body will complain at first, but the biggest
hurdle is just getting going.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">One
Beyonce song and then one RiRi. Four blocks around the neighborhood. Hike a
decent hill. Push yourself past the point where it starts to hurt, and you’ll
be amazed at how fast you progress.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b><br /></b></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b>3.</b> <b>Find something you enjoy.</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">This
was game changing for me. I can’t deal with the gym. I just can’t. I spent
years trying to guilt myself into going. When the self-guilt-trip worked, I’d
just cruise on the elliptical and do a couple sit ups and hate it the entire
time. It wasn’t until I discovered yoga and pilates that I actually looked
forward to working out.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">I’ll admit – I got a little
addicted for a while. I bought pilates groupons, yoga groupons, boot camp
groupons, dance class groupons… You name it. Most studios also have an
introductory deal, so you can keep things cheap for a while if you studio hop.
I've learned the hard way, though, that the key is making it sustainable is choosing studios / gyms
that are close by and that have convenient class times.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">For
built-in accountability & to make it something you look forward to. There have been many mornings when I’ve wanted to
bail on a workout, but I know I’d be letting my friend down if I did. So I wake
up instead of throwing my alarm out the window. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b><br /></b></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b>6. Focus on the positive.</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt;">I
truly believe that viewing exercise as a punishment or a chore
does not work. Reframe how you think about it. Change "I have to work out because I ate so much pizza last night" into "I have the <i>opportunity</i></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt;"> to work out today." Its amazing that you<i> get</i></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt;"> to invest in your fitness and your
health. Focus on your new confidence, your improvements, your new guns, or how
great you feel after working out. It’s much more effective.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><b>7. Set a goal.</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">I
find that I sometimes need something to look forward to for motivation when #1-6
aren’t enough. Maybe it’s an upcoming vacation or friend’s wedding, signing up
for a 5K, or a numerical goal like an 8 minute mile. Honestly, is that fast? I
don’t run, but it seems fast to me.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 3.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">I tend to be an all-or-nothing person. So
when I stop working out, whether it’s from getting sick or traveling or a
brutal month at work, it’s really hard to get back in and these tricks always help me jump start the routine again. If you find something
sustainable, set challenging but realistic goals, and start to feel the
positive benefits, I know you can do it too.</span></div>

<br />
You may have seen the Dove Real Beauty Sketches circulating on facebook and twitter this week. Granted, I'll keep buying my soap from <a href="http://www.lushusa.com/Honey-I-Washed-The-Kids-Soap/00482,en_US,pd.html?start=2&cgid=soap" target="_blank">LUSH</a> (its made more naturally and sourced ethically), but this campaign struck a chord with me and with so many others.<br />
<br />
It's brilliant because Dove flips marketing on its head. Instead of telling us that we are not enough, that we need their product to feel somehow more complete, they show us that we each have a natural beauty and intrinsic worth. It exposes that we are often our own worst critics, and suggests we should extend the same truth and grace to ourselves that we extend to others.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
For me, this video was so compelling because it goes beyond beauty. I think it struck a chord with so many women because we are not only hypercritical of our outward appearance, which we relate to our worth all too much, but also of larger issues of our value.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Maybe I shouldn't speak for all women, but speaking for myself, this message rings so true. I've been realizing recently that I hold myself to an impossible standard in my work and personal life. There are times I feel like I'm succeeding, but most of the time, I can't meet my self-imposed standards. Between career, marriage, friendships, a hyperactive puppy, trying to invest in my health through exercise and eating well, and blogging, it often feels like something is dropping. And with that comes a lot of negative self talk. <i>I'm a failure. I'm a bad wife. A horrible friend. I hate my lack of self control. I wish I could change my body type.</i> and on and on. I tell myself things I would never project onto other people. Wherever this comes from, it is not rooted in truth.</div>
<br />
Its a process, but I'm working on re-writing my internal narrative, trying to see myself as others see me, and meditating on gratefulness instead of fixating on imperfections.<br />
<br />
And this is a good place to start. Imperfections are what make life interesting, and you are more than you think you are. I am more than I give myself credit for.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Prop 37 didn’t pass last week, but I’m still convinced there is a growing food movement in the US. Just in the last few months, New York <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/13/new-york-approves-soda-ban-big-sugary-drinks_n_1880868.html" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">passed a soda ban</a>, schools have started to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/17/flamin-hot-cheetos-banned-california-new-mexico_n_1974131.html" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">ban Flamin’ Hot Cheetos</a>, and the Yes on Prop 37 Movement <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/magazine/why-californias-proposition-37-should-matter-to-anyone-who-cares-about-food.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">started a national dialogue</a> over genetically modified food.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

Its disappointing, but not surprising, that the Prop was crushed by the herd of Goliaths in Big Food and Big Ag. Companies like Monsanto, DuPont, Kraft and Coca Cola poured in $46 million dollars to oppose the bill and dominated the airwaves. Of course they didn’t want it to pass. God forbid consumers know how their food is made, because it may hurt business. I mean, isn’t the fact that they don’t want us to know concerning? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

I’m done ranting. Cross my heart. I don’t want to dwell on the why, although that’s important. There are much better articles written on that (<a href="http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/elist/eListRead/prop_37_defeat_reveals_a_food_movement_that_is_still_half_baked/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">like this one</a>) that you should read if you are interested.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

I want to talk about how we can move forward. Elections are important, but we should never forget that we vote every day by how we live and what choices we make. Companies change when consumers do. Here are some of my suggestions for continuing to vote yes on the Food Movement:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b>1. Vote with your $ & your choices</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Choose local over industrial, and organic over conventional when you can. Sign up for a co-op or a CSA, shop at farmer’s markets, start an urban garden. Search for ones near you at <a href="http://localharvest.org/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">localharvest.org</a>. Seriously, get a CSA. It’s the best. And no, they’re not paying me to say that.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
At the supermarket, you can avoid GMOs and processed foods by following Michael Pollan’s rules (and my interpretation of them):</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
-<span style="font: normal normal normal 7pt/normal 'Times New Roman';"> </span>Shop the edges of the supermarket (where the whole foods live).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
-<span style="font: normal normal normal 7pt/normal 'Times New Roman';"> </span>Don’t buy food that your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize (put down the go-gurt).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
-<span style="font: normal normal normal 7pt/normal 'Times New Roman';"> </span>Don’t eat anything with more than 5 ingredients, or ingredients you can’t pronounce (I’m looking at you, xantham gum).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
-<span style="font: normal normal normal 7pt/normal 'Times New Roman';"> </span>Don’t eat anything that won’t eventually rot (gross).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
And remember, the “all natural” label has nothing to do with being natural. #clevermarketing</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0.25in; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><b>2. Ask what’s in your food</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I may or may not be that person. You know the person. The one from Portlandia that asks a list of questions and goes to visit the farm before ordering the chicken. If you haven’t seen it, drop everything and <a href="http://www.hulu.com/watch/208808" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">watch it now</a>. I'm not joking.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">But honestly, the more we ask our farmers, our grocery stores, and our restaurants where their food comes from and what’s in it, the more accountability there is. Win-win.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<b>3. Use your voice</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I’m talking to myself here, because I'm disappointed I didn't do more for Prop 37 other than write a blog post and a couple tweets. Get civicly involved on this issue. The amazing thing about our country is that our senators and representatives <i>actually</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> have to listen to us. Call them, set up a meeting with them, attend a town hall meeting. I’ve done it for other issues, and its not that scary, I promise. If you’re nice and not hostile like most people they speak with, you’d be surprised at how easy it is. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
You can also support an organization, get involved in educating others about food, post some signs in your yard. <a href="http://Slowfoodusa.org/">Slowfoodusa.org</a> is a great place to start.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Whatever you do, stay tuned. The Food Movement entered politics, not without struggle, and is growing up. I can’t wait to watch and be a part of what’s next.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
And just like that, its Election Day. I hope you all are exercising your right to vote today. For my Cali friends, I wanted to write down my thoughts on Prop 37, which requires genetically modified foods to be labeled.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
I'm voting yes.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
I hope you look into it, and I hope you consider voting yes too. Here's why:</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<b>I believe we have the right to know what is in our food, and the right to choose for ourselves. </b>As of now, GM foods are allowed to be marketed and labeled as all natural. That seems much more confusing to the consumer, and it won't outlaw GMOs, just require them to be labeled.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
One of the big arguments on the other side is that it has not been proven tha<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;">t <span class="J-JK9eJ-PJVNOc" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial;">GMOs</span></span> are bad for you. Personally, I don't buy it. It takes years to do long-term studies on the effect on health, but the US is not requiring that we conduct any, even though numerous studies warn of <a href="http://www.consumersunion.org/pdf/AMA-GE-resolutions-3-19-12.pdf">health effects</a>. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<b>I've read that this will probably set the standard for the rest of the country</b>, and that is incredibly exciting. Where Monsanto & Big Food have been able to stifle the conversation in DC, we can start redefining the standard now. 60 other countries who label <span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="J-JK9eJ-PJVNOc" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial;">GMOs</span>,</span> including all of Europe, Japan, Australia, India, and China. Let's catch up.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">

<b>It shouldn't hike up prices. </b>Because companies don't want to lose your business. It doesn't change the ingredients companies are using, unless we all stop buying those foods, and the labeling cost will is not significant. </div>

Aside from that, I'd encourage you to read <a href="http://www.capradio.org/179403" target="_blank">this fascinating article on 37</a> from purely and economic angle. It argues that if the current information asymmetry continues between producer and consumer, it will drive down the quality of the product in the marketplace overall. </div>

When you have a blog, you are supposed to write in it, right? Right.<br />
<br />
Here's a confession: sometimes I think I can do it all, but I can't. Its been a busy time, and in trying to practice what I preach about eating and exercising, I guess I just took a hiatus from preaching. But I'm back and it feels so good. I've missed this, but I hope you've all been out enjoying summer and not missing me too much.<br />
<br />
In honor of summer's passing all too quickly (RIP June & July), I wanted to share my favorite go-to summer recipes. These have become staples over the last few weeks, and I hope you enjoy them too!<br />
<br />

1. Lemon and Herb Cous Cous<br />
Cous Cous: easy, filling, and the leftovers keep well. It must be love. You can use whatever herbs you have, but I recommend cilantro. It makes it so fresh.<br />

2. Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad<br />
Have I talked about my love for quinoa before? Yes, I believe I have. Throw in some summer tomatoes and... heaven.<br />

3. Peach Mozzarella Salad<br />
I'm actually not eating cheese right now, but this has been a big favorite in summers past. It's an interesting variation of the caprese salad that sounds strange but tastes divine.<br />

4. Sweetcorn Polenta<br />
<div>
This photo does not do this recipe justice. It is SO GOOD. A sweet friend lent me the cookbook <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Plenty-Vibrant-Recipes-Londons-Ottolenghi/dp/1452101248/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343876546&sr=1-1&keywords=plenty+cookbook" target="_blank">Plenty</a>, and oh goodness, it's amazing. It has a whole section on eggplant, and as I've been getting a lot of eggplant in my CSA lately, I can't stop making this. But I cheat and use store bought polenta. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(Please don't tell.)</span> Its so quick, the polenta is a great substitute for pasta, and its really filling. My kinda meal.<br />

5. Lentil & Rice Salad<br />
A friend once told me that brown rice and lentils are the key to keeping your waistline trim, and I couldn't agree more. If you are like me and a salad for dinner doesn't fill you up, lentils are a great option. I add as many veggies as possible and toss with my go-to homemade salad dressings.<br />

What are your favorite summer recipes?<br />

Lauranne helped design most of this blog, and she has been talking about LUSH for weeks, so I'm thrilled for her to share her knowledge with all of you! Enjoy, Tiff </i><br />
<br />
I’ve got to share with you that I’ve become a LUSH. Not in
the way you might assume, either.<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
A few months ago, I’d been itching to find a more natural
haircare routine. After many conversations with friends about
the excessive sulfates and unfriendly ingredients found in most all of our
brand-name shampoos and conditioners, I knew I wanted to be living more
naturally and giving my hair some more love.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
A friend and co-worker introduced me to <a href="http://www.lushusa.com/" target="_blank">LUSH</a>, a fresh and handmade cosmetic company creating skin and haircare products from organic fruit and vegetables, essential oils and safe synthetics – with a personality. I was intrigued and excited by the vision and the story behind the LUSH brand. Everything created is made by hand in small batches with little preservatives by fun, happy, like-minded people. LUSH sources all of their ingredients ethically, with no animal cruelty, traveling worldwide to meet the faces behind their ingredients to ensure fair working conditions and sustainability – entrepreneurs in Ghana, Morocco, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, Vancouver, and the Colorado Rockies.<br />

Regardless of where you are, experiment with what works best for your hair and find the brands that align with the values most important to you! Sometimes we can get in a tizzy with the plethora of choices at our fingertips but LUSH reminds us that it can and should be <i>fun</i>. Remembering that our skin is our largest organ and gradually transitioning
to a more natural haircare routine has allowed my skin and hair to drink in better, fresher ingredients each week and given me confidence in the
sourcing of what I’m purchasing. Knowing that the individuals behind my purchase are being taken care of and respected is important to me and that not only brings excitement back to a hair and skincare routine but aligns with my values.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>If you’re looking to try products from LUSH, I'm currently loving:</i> Godiva Solid Shampoo, BIG Shampoo, American Cream Conditioner, Honey I Washed the Kids soap, Ocean Salt scrub, Celestial Moisterizer, and the Aqua Mirabilis exfoliating bar.<br />
<br />
P.S. Fun fact: if you're planning on purchasing a few items, check out their UK store. With the currency conversion, it can be cheaper (including shipping!) and will take a just a week or two!</div>
